  • The Return of the Employee

Daddy Goldfish and I have been calmly and sometimes not-so-calmly debating our financial future lately. Although the Christmas season was FABULOUS with income from my designing cards and taking photos, the slump has arrived.  Now that I have graduated, we have student loan payments to consider, and there is really not a good way to provide for those bills without steady income from me.  We have stripped our budget (even more than before), looked at the situation from all angles, and finally came to the decision that Baby Goldfish was old enough for me to get a part time job and go to stay with Grandma Goldfish 1 two days a week and Grandma Goldfish 2 one day a week.

I searched for a few months.  I honestly did not think that it would take that long to find something, but between being passed over for many of the positions for being "overqualified," and many jobs having terrible hours and even worse pay, I got a call from a regional bank that Daddy Goldfish used to work for, asking for an interview.  The process was long, but smooth, and I came out with a VERY generous offer that we knew we couldn't refuse.

I recently made a pro/ con list for returning to the workplace.  Call me a dork, but this was super important!

    Pros:

    • Being able to leave my work at the door when I leave

    • Less responsibility than operating my own business FT = less stress

    • Having steady, predictable income

    • Having a job that allows me to work PT while still in a respectable supervisor position

    • Taking stress off of my husband over finances

    • Having a reason to get out of the house and be a part of society

    • Being able to keep my business going on the side for fun

    • Job description seems like fun

    Cons:

    • Potentially missing some of Baby Goldfish's development

    • Having to run around like crazy and get Baby Goldfish out early in the morning

    • Not having enough time to devote to design and photography too

    • Not being there to decide every little thing that Baby Goldfish does

    • Working Saturdays

    • Would not know what to do if I happened to get pregnant soon - I would want to stay home with that child for a while too, but would be torn between career and home life

There were more reasons to go through with it than just the tightness with the student loan repayment, so I felt this was the right thing to do.

What are your reasons for going back to work or staying home?  How did you keep your routines organized?  What were your fears?
